Emilia said “very good” to the waitress as she sat in a cafe with her son Dan. The waitress took the order and went to fetch it.
The woman really wanted to get her son’s attention, because her son was only focused on the screen of his phone all the time.
The boy muttered “yes”, but he was looking at the phone screen again. But suddenly she raised her head, looked around and said that she wished things were different, but a woman can’t go anywhere except in this wheelchair.
Emilia tried to ignore her son’s sarcastic comment and took a sip of her water. She said it was great that they were able to see each other again after so many years. She asked how his college classes were going. The woman asked these questions because she really wanted to know more about her son’s life.
After leaving for college, Dan very rarely called his mother, Emilia knew that his son had grown and become more independent. It was not easy for him to grow up and spend his life with his disabled mother, even with the caregivers he was sometimes with.
He so wanted his son to continue to enjoy life away from his personal problems. However, it would be nice to have him with his mother from time to time.
Therefore, he made a decision and invited his son to a gala dinner, even repeatedly begging him to accept the offer. She even gave him her grandfather’s very expensive watch to take his consent.
Emilia grabbed the glass of water again to take a sip, but the water accidentally hit the table and the glass shattered on the floor. The sound was so loud that everyone in the restaurant stared at them, and eventually Dan finally stopped staring at his phone screen.
He said he couldn’t even eat well if the woman didn’t draw extra attention to herself and people stared at them. He really did not want to go to dinner, but Emilia continued to persuade him. He said he couldn’t wait for their food to finish.
Emilia’s eyes widened at her son’s anger, she knew that all the people were looking at them and that her voice was echoing throughout the restaurant. Eventually, she began to cry softly and told him to go home.
Dan grabbed a chair to stand up. Emilia looked at him and saw the angry expression on his face. In the bright yellow light from the cafe ceiling, the wrinkles on his forehead were more visible.
Dan asked him what happened. He said he would give anything to have his mother come with him. He told her everything about life, love, hopes and dreams. She raised him alone and became disabled.
The state of health prevented him from working normally and living like everyone else. But she raised him, never left him hungry. He wanted nothing more and was content with what he had.
He told her that he owned this and many other restaurants in Chicago. This is because he did not see his own success.
Dan lowered his head in shame, while Emilia stared at the restaurateur, fully focused on her story. He told the boy to call his real mother and talk to her. There could not have been a better time for this. Otherwise, he will never be a real man if he does not take this step.
Emilia looked at her son with tears in her eyes. The boy closed his eyes and said that his heart really broke, Emilia wanted so badly to hug him so that his heartache would go away.
He stood up and hugged her, again apologizing for what he had said. He said his job was done and the food would be ready soon, and one of the waiters would quickly come over to pick up the broken glass.
Dan sat back down, put his phone away, wiped away his tears and told her about himself. He said that his lessons are going well, but they are a bit boring for him.
Emilia smiled and wiped the tears from her face. The rest of the dinner was fantastic. Finally, they understood each other and everything worked out. Dan will never hurt his mother again in his life.
