Photographer Nick Hannes captures an intriguing scene where a woman appears to be “floating” above a beach in Belgium during a speech at a European Union event. This illusion has long fascinated people due to its manipulation of perspective and depth perception.
In this mind-bending image from the internet’s optical illusion archives, the woman seems to levitate on what looks like a “magic carpet.” The photo has sparked curiosity as it plays with our perception of reality.
Optical illusions occur when our brain and eyes interpret an image in a way that contradicts the actual physical scene. They can be classified into various types, such as geometrical, ambiguous, tactical, and motion illusions.

While some visual illusions are coincidental, others are intentionally created and often become popular subjects for street or outdoor photography, as seen in this “magic carpet” illusion.
Although viewers initially perceive the woman as floating above the sand, closer examination reveals that the platform she stands on has flat edges, debunking the illusion.
The apparent hovering of the microphone stand over the beach is not due to heat shimmer or atmospheric distortion. Instead, it is a remarkable interplay of light and shadows that gives rise to this optical phenomenon.
In reality, the woman delivering her speech stands on a podium placed on the sand, and the shadow “underneath” the platform is cast by a flagpole. As the flag itself is not within the camera’s field of view, it creates the impression of the female speaker floating above the beach.
