Our eyes frequently engage in the activity of reading words, whether they are on paper, screens, boards, or billboards. We do this multiple times a day without realizing that we are constantly surrounded by words.
While reading words itself is not difficult, the challenge arises when we have to interpret certain lines or read sentences from a considerable distance, which tests our visual abilities.
However, what if we told you that by gazing at a peculiar optical illusion for a few seconds, you would temporarily lose the ability to read words?
Created by JackpotJoy, this visual illusion becomes active as soon as you fixate your eyes on its central spiral.
What you will see is a multi-colored spiral with a star at its center. The background of the image is blue. You should focus your gaze on the dot in the middle of the spiral. Once you do so, the multi-colored spiral will appear to start spinning and blurring, even though it remains motionless.
Our eyes adapt to the spinning motion due to a hypnotic effect called the spiral motion aftereffect. Once our eyes adjust to this motion, the static image will seem to either shrink or expand in the opposite direction.
At this point, if you divert your gaze elsewhere to read words, it may seem as though the letters are melting or moving.
You can try it yourself:

There are numerous optical illusions that trick viewers into perceiving stationary dots or shapes as moving in a specific direction. These popular illusions utilize shapes, spatial arrangement, color, and positioning to challenge our brains.
“The rotating motion is a result of how the brain processes the intricate image. The brain assumes that the eyes are stable and stationary, so it interprets the pattern as moving to compensate. As a result, the pattern appears to move,” explained Bhavin Shah.
