I couldn’t eat.” The Maasai people were the last remnants of an uncivilized culture in Kenya, causing considerable challenges for the government.
Despite the judgments and ridicule she faced from others in Nairobi and the luxury hotels, Corinna remained undeterred.
Even the visa extension department staff whispered disapprovingly behind her back.
Her chosen partner had nothing but a loincloth and a few goats to his name, residing in a humble dwelling plastered with cow dung.
Life didn’t get any easier for Corinna—she battled malaria, coped with pregnancy, managed her own grocery store, and faced disappointments.
The stark differences in mindset eventually took a toll on their relationship.
Lketingi, her Maasai husband, became consumed by jealousy, and Corinna made a life-altering decision—to flee to Switzerland with their daughter.
Leaving behind a series of heartfelt letters, she deceived her husband and embarked on a journey back to her homeland.
Fourteen years later, Corinna returned to Kenya when her daughter Napirai had reached adulthood.
Prior to that, fear had prevented her from revisiting the country, as Lketingi had the power to forbid Napirai from returning.
Her departure had a profound impact on her ex-husband’s life—he was expelled from the ranks of the Maasai warriors and spiraled into heavy drinking.
Now residing in Switzerland, Corinna has found solace in painting.
Meanwhile, Lketingi has moved on, building another family and raising multiple children.
In photographs, he appears melancholic, his community viewing divorce with disdain, and Corinna’s escape tarnished his reputation.
To share her unique journey both in Africa and afterward, Corinna Hofmann penned an autobiographical novel titled “The White Maasai.”
However, Corinna is no longer alone.
She frequently shares pictures of her travels with a man of her own age on her official social media page, embracing the newfound joys of companionship.
