Owls are one of the largest birds of prey. They have a fairly large wingspan and are as strong as eagles. In addition, they are quite smart and act out of habit. So if there is a slight change happening around them, they notice it almost immediately.
Hawk Conservancy Trust is a major center for the conservation and rehabilitation of birds of prey.
Recently, conservationist Tom Morath installed several hidden cameras in an owl enclosure to shoot a video of burrowing owls. Although he used to shoot birds all the time, his intention was to see what the burrowing owls were doing in his absence.
He also wondered how these birds behaved in his absence. He just wanted to know if their behavior was different from what they were doing in his presence.
Eventually, owls croaked around where he placed the hidden camera. Surprisingly, it didn’t take long for the birds to find the camera. Although it was not well hidden, the birds managed to find it within 30 seconds.
The owls began to communicate with each other, trying to find out what kind of strange object was in their enclosure. Sometimes they even tried to get rid of the camera.
For the birds it was something new and unusual, they sometimes approached the camera. In the end, they managed to throw the camera out of hiding and start playing with it. They fiddled with it with their beaks, not yet understanding what it was.
According to Morath, burrowing owls are full of expression, just like any other bird. However, these breeds of owls are full of character.
Burrowing owls are always active and engage in a variety of activities. They are called so because they dig their nests. Sometimes they also occupy burrows abandoned by other animals. But they would never do that in front of people. Catching them in action on camera was exceptional.
Mr. Morath also explained that owls are very intelligent and curious. The staff of the Hawk Conservancy Trust needed to perform regular maintenance on the enclosures. But sometimes burrowing owls would jump into water bowls and grab employees’ sponges. Then the latter was to take it from the owls.
In the enclosure, burrowing owls never rested. On the contrary, they flew, ran and played with each other all the time in their space. The birds also had toys such as a bamboo ball and small pebbles to play with.
