Love of the day: mother koala carries two cubs on her back

ART and NATURE

Residents of the state of Victoria in Australia recently filmed the cutest scene they encountered on the road. A mother koala was crossing the road with two small passengers on her back.

They were her adorable little babies. Usually, a female koala gives birth to only one cub per year, so twin koalas are rarely seen. It was a wonderful scene.

“Look at this adorable mother koala with two cubs,” says the woman in the video, which quickly racked up millions of views. Cubs can ride on their mother’s back until they are about 6-7 months old.

It should be recalled once again that Australia’s koalas are endangered.

Nearly a third of these marsupials, admired and adored by many people, have disappeared in the past three years, according to new data released by the Australian Koala Foundation.

Animal populations are declining as Australia grapples with climate change and other pressing issues. Since 2018, the country has lost about 30% of its koalas.

The non-profit conservation group has called on the Australian government to do more to combat what it calls a “worrisome trend”.

In the organization’s report, cited by NBC News, analysts calculated that the koala population has declined by as much as 41%.
