The dog from “I Am Legend” is now 13 years old and still the best friend one could ever hope for

I Am Legend may have been one of the many films that helped establish Will Smith as a serious actor in 2000 (along with The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds).

But we certainly all know who the real star of the apocalyptic movie is.

The scenes between Robert Neville (played by Smith) and his beloved German Shepherd named Sam, who was given to him by his daughter when he was a very young puppy before she died in a helicopter crash, were the most emotional in the film.

It’s all poignant, sometimes humorous, and at some point downright tragic.

But before you go to bed thinking about how this story ended for Sam, it’s worth noting that the real story is much happier.

Even though the movie was released over 10 years ago, Abby, Sam’s dog, is now alive and well.

Better yet, she still lives with the family of her trainer, Steve Behrens, who said the 13-year-old dog is now enjoying his retirement with his daughter and children.

She has grown older and is now almost deaf. But she kicks and still likes balls and bone.
