These 11 friends, ages 65 to 85, started their own home to avoid nursing homes

LIFE STORIES

11 grandmothers from Montauban spent 10 years looking for a house to live together only to avoid going to a nursing home.

When we talk about roommates, the first thought that comes to mind is students or young people who have decided to live apart from their parents.

But in recent years, we often hear many stories about how older people also began to live separately.

There are even older people who prefer to share their homes with students. In Montauban, a group of older women between 65 and 85 were preparing to live together. They decided to extend their independence and live under the same roof.

It’s been about 6 years since they created their house, which they called “La Maison d’Isis”. Their goal was cohabitation, they wanted to live separately, but together, so to speak, to have their own apartments in the same building.

This was so that they would all be independent and not dependent on their children. They all tried to make sure that they were not sent to a nursing home.

This idea for a new home came about after they heard about another home that had become a senior residence and the location was in Montreuil. After that, they decided to create their own house.

In France, nursing homes are not very cheap and besides that, there is still not enough space for new residents.

So, in 2015, they made an appointment with a social landlord and found housing they could afford at the time. They were offered a place that had been abandoned for many years and didn’t fit.

They still continue to search for land for their project and contact mainly those who are not against cohabitation with a student. Agree, it would be ideal for an elderly person to live with a person of their age! Everyone has dreamed about it.

It could be in some building in different apartments, or in the same apartment with other elderly people. This is good because older people will understand each other better and, if necessary, take care of each other and also share pleasant moments and future memories.
